New Thruway Rate for Gooseneck Trailers

The Thruway Authority has announced the creation of a new 5th wheel trailer or “gooseneck” trailer toll rate.  This new rate seeks to address the problem of pick -ups with gooseneck trailers being charged the same rate as tractor trailers.

Under this new rate, pickups with gooseneck trailers will pay a lower rate than tractor trailers, however this new rate will still be higher than pickups pulling a regular bumper-hitch trailer.

To obtain the new rate, farms will need to get a normal E-ZPass for their pickup truck.  This can be done on-line by visiting: http://www.e-zpassny.com/ or by filling out a form available by clicking here. (http://www.e-zpassny.com/static/downloads/individual.shtml)

The farm will then need to send an application in for the gooseneck rate and a separate E-ZPass tag.  This form is available by clicking here. (http://www.nysthruway.gov/ezpass/ta-w68176.pdf)

When driving on the Thruway, a farm will need to make sure that only one of the E-ZPass tags is readable (the other should be placed in the foil pouch), otherwise they will be charged on both tags.  The new rate is only available by participating in the E-ZPass system.

An example of the Tolls for a pickup truck with a two axle gooseneck are:

Exit 18-New Paltz to Exit 24-Albany

Tractor trailer rate: $9.98

New gooseneck rate: $7.22

Bumber-hitch trailer (2-axle) and pickup: $4.64

Exit 33-Verona/Rome to Exit 48-Batavia

Tractor trailer rate: $19.05

New gooseneck rate: $13.78

Bumber-hitch trailer (2-axle) and pickup: $8.82

New York Farm Bureau is working on legislation to continue to lower these toll amounts to the same rate that other trailers are currently paying.
