NYFB Foundation visits Brooklyn classroom

Back in May, New York Farm Bureau Foundation Director Sandie Prokop along with Foundation Board member and dairy farmer Judi Whittaker, journeyed to Brooklyn to bring the story of agriculture to more than 200 students in a Head Start program in one of the local schools.

The school, on its own, reached out to the Foundation via www.nyfbfoundation.org  and asked for someone to visit to teach the children about agriculture.

Prokop and Whittaker began by explaining daily life on a dairy farm, and compared it to what the students’ families do in every day life. To relate to the students even more, the sights, sounds, colors of dairy farms were relayed to the children.

The team then made butter with the students and told them about the Kids Growing Food program, which is the hands-on component of the New York Ag in the Classroom program. Its purpose is to help students to understand how food grows by providing them with gardening experience at school.
