March 7, 2008 Promotion & Education News for Grassroots and WEB Madison, Steuben and Genesee Students Win NYFB Scholarships A college education just got a little easier for three New York high school seniors. They were named first, second, and third place winners in New York Farm Bureau’s statewide scholarship contest organized by the Promotion and Education Committee. The contest provides scholarship funds to students who plan to major in an agriculture-related field in college. The competition begins at the county level, continues at the district level, and culminates with the statewide winners being chosen. The first place prize of a $1,500 scholarship goes to Daniel P. Durfee from Madison County. Any Quanz from Steuben County will receive a $1,200 scholarship for coming in second, and the $1,000 prize goes to Alicia M. Keller from Genesee County. ![]() Daniel Durfee of Chittenango, the son of Steven and Mary Lou Durfee, lives on his family’s dairy farm in Madison County, where he milks, carries out extensive breeding selections and helps with all aspects of the operation. Daniel attends Chittenango High school. He is active in 4-H, Jr. Holstein Club, the Envirothon Team, community service and sports. He has received a variety of awards for his participation in all activities. Daniel plans to continue his education at Cornell University with a major in animal science and a future career as a dairy farmer and veterinarian. ![]() The second place winner of a $1,200 scholarship, Amy Quanz, is the daughter of Tom and Paula Quanz of Wayland, New York. On their farm, Amy helps in caring for a small herd of cattle and swine, and assists in field work and general farm maintenance. Amy is active in 4-H, Interact, the Big Sister Program, her church, Holstein Association and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as a class officer. She has been active in the Dairy Princess Program, serving as Dairy Ambassador, Alternate Dairy Princess and Dairy Princess. Amy plans to attend the Albany College of Pharmacy majoring in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a career in Bovine Pharmaceutical Research. ![]() Winner of the $1,000 scholarship, Alicia Keller, of Corfu, is a senior at Pembroke Jr/Sr High School in Genesee County and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Keller, Jr. Amanda lives and works on her family’s farm where she has responsibilities for assisting with feeding, cleaning, breeding, maintenance of records, and a variety of other duties. She is active in S.A.D.D, Key Club, Student Council, sports, National Junior Swine Association, and community service, as well as National Honor Society and a variety of clubs and youth programs. Alicia plans to attend Cornell or Purdue University, majoring in applied economics and management with a focus on agriculture. |
