Wheelock, Hymas Inspire Farm Bureau Members

NASA astronaut Col. Douglas Wheelock and inspirational speaker Chad Hymas addressed the members of the New York Farm Bureau during the group’s State Annual Meeting in Niagara Falls on Dec. 5. Their motivational messages encouraged the participants to continue to strive for the goals and aspirations of their county and state Farm Bureaus.

Wheelock is the brother of Farm Family agent Dave Wheelock and a native of Broome County. He recently returned from a November mission to the International Space Station. While in space, he was part of an important repair to the Space Station and showed the group video and photos of his experience.

In addressing the Farm Bureau, Wheelock stressed that teamwork employs the talents of each member to make the whole team stronger—and smarter. When everyone’s strengths are tapped, the team has much more to offer than just the sum of its parts.

Hymas, who became a quadriplegic in 2001 following a farm accident, discussed the importance of giving time to the people and organizations that matter to you. Through his emotional story of tragedy and then overcoming the physical and emotional challenges that kept him from success, he encouraged listeners to embrace and adapt to change.

Hymas has now realized his dream of operating a 5,100-acre elk preserve with his father and asked the group to motivate themselves to reach the shared goals of Farm Bureau.

Both speakers were sponsored by Farm Family Insurance.
