NYFB Statement on Senate Passage of 2018 Farm Bill

“New York Farm Bureau is hopeful that Congress will reach consensus on a final Farm Bill after the overwhelming support the legislation received yesterday in the U.S. Senate. The bi-partisan vote brought Democrats and Republicans together to agree on advancing agricultural and nutrition policy in this country that is sorely needed. The bill includes improvements to risk management tools which are especially important to farmers as the farm economy continues to suffer from low commodity prices and questions remain about the future of agricultural exports. We are in a profession full of unpredictability, and the Farm Bill offers some stability by giving farmers more options to plan for the future the best that they can. For example, in extreme weather conditions, crop insurance helps to stabilize farm income which in turn benefits consumers who depend on farmers to provide food for their tables. New York Farm Bureau is especially grateful to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for their support, and we look forward to working with all of the members of our congressional delegation to reach final agreement on the Farm Bill, which now moves to conference committee to hash out differences with the U.S. House of Representatives," said David Fisher, New York Farm Bureau President.
