ALBANY,
N.Y. - Cayuga County Residents,
Slade & Kristin Cox received the
2007 Young Farmer Achievement Award
during New York Farm Bureau's State
Annual Meeting held last week in
Niagara Falls. This award recognizes
young farmers for their agricultural
pursuits and leadership within the
community. The Cox' were awarded
$1,000 from Dodge and the New York
Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher
Program, use of a Kubota M Series
Utility Tractor for one year and an
expense-paid trip to the American
Farm Bureau Convention.
The
Excellence in Agriculture Award,
which recognizes young farmers for
their contributions to agriculture
and to Farm Bureau, was presented to
Kathryn & James Canzonier from
Jefferson County. Participants are
judged on their involvement in
agriculture, leadership ability, and
their participation in Farm Bureau
and other organizations. The couple
received $1,000 from Dodge & the NY
Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher
Program, a Stihl MS 290 Farm Boss
Chainsaw and an expense-paid trip to
the American Farm Bureau Convention.
The third and final contest for
members of the Young Farmers group
(up to 35 years of age) is the
Discussion Meet which took place
throughout the day on Tuesday,
December 4. The Discussion Meet is a
contest that simulates a committee
meeting, with contestants working
cooperatively as they discuss issues
important to agriculture.
The four
finalists for the Discussion Meet
were Sarah Colby from Monroe County,
Slade Cox from Cayuga County, Robert
DiCarlo from Ontario County and
Pamela Ferry from Schoharie County.
They participated in a lively
discussion of "What is the public
perception of the family farm and
how does that perception impact
future agricultural policy
discussion?" Pamela Ferry was
selected as the winner in a very
close contest and received $1,000
from Dodge and the N.Y. Farm Bureau
Young Farmer & Rancher Program, a
prize from Grainger, and an
expense-paid trip to the American
Farm Bureau Federation Annual
Convention.

These
individuals will represent New York
Farm Bureau during American Farm
Bureau Federation's annual
convention scheduled for January
13-16, 2008 in New Orleans,
Louisiana. The winners of each of
the contests at the national level
will receive a selected 2008 Dodge
pick-up.
New York
Farm Bureau's State Annual Meeting
brings together members of the
largest agricultural advocacy group
in the state to determine the
policies that will guide the
organization for the coming year. |
