2009 Scholarship Program Outline (in Word Format)
Criteria:
1. Scholarship open to High School Seniors who will continue
their education to prepare for a career in some way connected to the
diverse agricultural industry.
2. Candidates may live or work on a farm or be involved with
agriculture via any avenue.
3. Family Farm Bureau membership or Student Farm Bureau
membership is required.

Process and Procedure:
1. Completed application packets will be returned to New
York Farm Bureau (NYFB) in Albany. Deadline of November 21, 2008
postmark.
2. The State Promotion & Education Representative will
arrange a District level competition with support from the District
counties. Scoring will determine the County winners as well as the
District Winner. You will be contacted regarding date, time, and
location. The judging event may necessitate a personal interview and
essay presentation or may be based solely upon the application and
attachments. The judging will take place prior to January 20,
2009.
3. The County winner (to receive their county’s usual award)
will be the individual with the highest scoring from each particular
group of county applicants. The overall highest score of all the
candidates will be the District winner.
4. **The District Winners will be eligible for the
Scholarship (1st of $1,500, 2nd of $1,200 and 3rd of $1,000.) They
will be judged based upon the application and attachments. After
selection as a District Winner, the student will have two weeks in which
to update any part of the application submitted. The final
application MUST BE postmarked by two weeks from date of selection or
the student will not be eligible.
5. The application may be reproduced. No hand written
applications will be accepted.
Essay topic:
1. If you had the power to change something in your community
or on your farm, what would you change and why?
2. At the District level, oral presentation of the essay may
be part of the selection process. There is a limit of 5 minutes
for the presentation.
Additional requirements (as noted on the application):
1. A school photo, not computer image, (wallet size head and
shoulders shot) is required and will become the property of NYFB.
Applicant’s signature will authorize consent to use this photo for news
releases and exhibit purposes.
District Winners Receive:
1. A $100 check from the Promotion & Education Committee.
2. A certificate and a gift.
3. The opportunity to compete for one of three statewide
scholarships.
The three NYFB scholarship winners will be invited to attend the Spring
Conference on March 27, 2009 at the Holiday Inn, Auburn N.Y. as a guest
of the NYFB Promotion & Education Committee, the first place winner to
present their essay before the conference.
