Farm Bureau Members Have a Positive Affect
How amenable would New York communities be to farming if the benchmark of agricultural education had not been continually raised? Thankfully, there are a number of diverse projects and events sponsored and executed by County Farm Bureaus that educate the public about agriculture. The volunteers that give their time and energies must be commended for what they do and what they have accomplished. Some of their activities include:
• Food Check-Out Day, Food-Fact Placemats, food and monetary donations to Ronald McDonald House and local food pantries, baskets with agricultural products and information delivered to media sources
• Ag Stravaganza, Ag Citement, Zoofest, Fun-on-the-Farm, farm school tours, on-farm open houses, legislative farm tours, Conservation Field Days, Ag. Expo, Ag. Square, Chamber of Commerce Showcases and many additional events with differing titles
• Bookmarks with agricultural facts
• County "Ag Fact" Maps
• Adopt - a - Classroom Projects
• Ag publication circulated to a non-farm readership
• "The Ten Things Kids Want to Know About Farming" video distributions
• Farm Facts book distributions
• CD-Roms with county ag facts
• Dairy Day celebrations, Harvest Festivals, county fair displays and events
• Fundraising events for ag education
• Scholarships
• Farm-City celebrations
• Rural/Urban dinners
• Informational meetings, Ag Visioning Projects, Directories
• Bounty of the County dinners, featuring all county agricultural products
• Columns and articles in local papers
There are many opportunities for anyone interested spreading the word about agriculture. Has your County Farm Bureau worked on a special project? Have you shared that idea with other counties? Have you entered that idea for the Promotion & Education Award or the County Idea Exchange? If not, there are plenty of opportunities waiting for your County Farm Bureau.
